In doing so, Sergio is taking on the role of his parents, who started reading bedtime stories to him as a baby. ![]() In his essay, titled, "How My Family Has Helped Me Appreciate Reading," Sergio says he reads story books to his brothers, ages 2 and 6. "I hope you continue to read to your younger brothers." "Sergio is going to be a great leader, I can tell," Horne told the assembled students, teachers and school district staff. State Education Commissioner Jim Horne visited the school to present Sergio with his prize, a Compaq home computer and a four-year scholarship to any state college or university. Sergio, 11, of Gainesville, received the award Monday afternoon during an assembly at his school. ![]() This year, the Williams Elementary fifth-grader was chosen from among 3,000 students as one of three winners in Florida's first Hispanic Heritage Essay contest.
